Dr. Stearns Earns S.M.A.R.T. Certification
Dr. Stearns received her S.M.A.R.T.™ certification after attending a course in Bryn Mawr, Penn., hosted by Dr. Ernesto Lee, a world-renowned Master Clinician and educator in the fields of Implant and Esthetic Dentistry. He is also the developer of the S.M.A.R.T. Minimally Invasive Bone Grafting Technique.
She is the first Oral Surgeon to receive the certification in Colorado.
Per S.M.A.R.T.™, “The S.M.A.R.T.™ (Subperiosteal Minimally Invasive Aesthetic Ridge Augmentation Technique) bone grafting method requires only a small incision, with no flap elevation, no tenting screws and no membranes. It delivers a xenograft/growth factor mixture to the site, using specially designed instruments and laparoscopic techniques. Boneaugmentation can be performed predictably and with minimal risk of complications. Complex scenarios in the esthetic zone can be treated with fewer procedures, and less risk of soft tissue deformities. The S.M.A.R.T.™ method represents a disruptive technology that will dramatically impact the future of bone grafting.”
This innovative technique will give the ability to correct not only horizontal bony defects but it will also allow the opportunity to address vertical deficits to place implants in the proper position. The S.M.A.R.T.™ technique can also be applied to the posterior mandible where it is often difficult to gain an increase in horizontal and vertical bone. Once the bone graft is completed it will require six months of healing prior to implant placement.
Dr. Lee addressed certain scenarios where this technique can be applied in potential implants that are compromised.
The new technique ultimately allows the patient to have one surgical site instead of a donor and recipient site. It also allows for decreased discomfort and risk of complications is minimal.
At Burnham Oral Surgery, we focus on personalized care for each patient and this new skill will allow us to continue with that promise.
Last month, Dr. Burnham and Dr. Stearns traveled to the Straumann headquarters to tour the facility and learn about innovative solutions for anterior implant therapy. There, they learned more about S.M.A.R.T. and the certification course.
