Dr. Burnham and I recently traveled to the Straumann headquarters, which is located right outside of Boston, to tour the facility and learn about innovative solutions for anterior implant therapy.
First and foremost, I must say thank you to our great Straumann reps Dana Wasserman and Colin Duffield for the amazing tour.
The Straumann facilities were top notch. We began our tour at quality assurance to observe where the raw materials meet rigorous specifications to become an implant and components associated with dental implants. Next, we toured through the manufacturing portion of the facility and watched several of the mills drilling abutment screws, healing caps and impression analogs. The tour concluded with getting a first-hand look at the packaging and sterilization process.
In my opinion, the quality control at Straumann is essential to what makes them a great asset to our industry and its commitment to quality, which greatly aligns with the principles at Burnham Oral Surgery, sets them apart from other providers.
While at the facility we were fortunate to attend a lecture by Dr. Ernesto Lee. In his presentation, he focused on the treatment in the esthetic zone and discussed several techniques on preserving the gingiva and abilities to improve the esthetics after implant placement.
Dr. Lee also introduced a new a bone grafting technique S.M.A.R.T (Minimally Invasive Aesthetic Ridge Augmentation Technique). This technique offers the ability to increase both height and width of a bony defect with better outcomes, less pain, and fewer complications.
This technique requires additional training and specialized surgical instruments and I will be attending the class in December to learn this skill and begin providing patients with this surgical option.
Be sure to check out my next blog post to hear about the course.
